An American priest and martyr, Blessed Stanley Rother (March 27, 1935 – July 28, 1981) is honored as a patron of missionaries and priests. He was killed in Guatemala for his missionary work and dedication to the local community. It is widely believed that the attackers were linked to a paramilitary death squad, although the exact perpetrators were never definitively identified.
Initially, three men were arrested and confessed to killing Rother during a robbery attempt, but many considered them innocent, suspecting that the arrests were a cover-up for paramilitary involvement. Their convictions were later overturned by a Guatemalan appellate court, and no other suspects were prosecuted.
Note: in the Catholic Church, being martyred for the faith is one of the primary paths to sainthood, but it does not automatically make someone a saint. Martyrdom is recognized as a heroic witness to the faith, and the Church has a formal process for canonizing those who die for the faith. Being declared Blessed is the step before being declared a Saint.
When a person is beatified by the Pope, the Church grants them the title Blessed and the right to have a liturgical feast day. However, this feast is not celebrated on the universal liturgical calendar for the whole Church. Instead, it is typically granted to specific dioceses or religious orders that have a close connection to the Blessed’s life or work
