"Learning in Wartime" by C.S. Lewis.
Delivered on October 22, 1939 at St. Mary the Virgin Church, Oxford, Learning in War Time was C.S. Lewis’s response to the question of whether university study was worthwhile when war was imminent. Lewis argued that:
Learning is part of human nature and should not be suspended in crises.
War is a temporary, temporal condition; the eternal matters more.
Even in wartime, people continue many “normal” activities, and surrendering entirely to one cause removes one from God
The “enemies” of excitement, frustration, and fear can distract from our true purpose.
The sermon is both a defense of humanistic learning and a reminder that the “Kingdom” is eternal, unlike nations, parties, or wars.
