About The Church of Mary, Mother of God (Cappella di Santa Maria Regina della Famiglia) in the Vatican Gardens:
The Church of Mary, Mother of the Family is a place of Catholic worship located inside Vatican City, in the Vatican Gardens. It is the chapel of the Governorate of Vatican City State.
In 1926, architect Giuseppe Momowas commissioned by Pope Pius XI the construction of a building inside the Vatican Gardens, behind St. Peter’s Basilica, as the new seat of the Pontifical Roman Minor Seminary; attached to this there was to be a chapel dedicated to Santa Marta, in memory of the homonymous church, demolished the previous year. Following the Lateran Pacts (February 11, 1929) the intended use of the palace was changed in the headquarters of the Vatican City State and the church of Santa Marta became the chapel.
In 1982, the presbytery was readjusted to the new liturgical needs enshrined in the Second Vatican Council and the new major altar was installed.
In 2007, following a restoration intervention both inside and outside, the church, at the behest of Pope Benedict XVI, changed his title to the church of Mary Mother of the Family and was solemnly dedicated on September 13 of the same year by Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.
