About the Abbey of Saint Victor in Marseille, France:
The Abbey of Saint Victor is a historic and working Catholic church located near the Old Port. Founded in the 5th century by John Cassian, it is one of Marseille’s most significant religious sites, featuring a fortified exterior, a crypt with sarcophagi, and a yearly Candlemas pilgrimage. Today, visitors can explore the basilica and its crypts, which hold relics and a statue of the “Black Madonna”.
Founded by John Cassian in the 5th century, the abbey is dedicated to the 4th-century martyr, Saint Victor. It has played a significant role in Christianity in the Mediterranean and was made a minor basilica in 1934. The building is known for its fortified appearance, with massive stone walls and towers. The crypts are particularly noteworthy for their early Christian sarcophagi and tombs.
The abbey contains relics of Saint John Cassian and is home to the statue of the “Black Madonna” in the Chapel of Our Lady of Confession. A major annual pilgrimage takes place here on Candlemas (February 2nd).
It is a functioning church with daily Mass services. The public can visit the basilica for free, while a small fee is charged for access to the crypt.
About Saint John Cassian:
You will find the tomb of Saint John Cassian (c.360 AD – 435 AD) here in the Abbey of Saint Victor. Sometimes called John Cassian the Roman, he originally was educated in the middle East, later went to Rome and finally ended up in Marseille, where he founded the Abbey. His Feast Day is July 23rd. He was never formally canonized a Saint, since that process had not yet been formalized at the time of his death, but he is still considered a Saint.
Saint Cassian’s relics can be found in the underground chapel, but his head and right hand are in the main church. Guided visits are available on certain days, and for self-guided tours you can download an app on your smartphone.
