The Basilica and National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians at Hubertus, Wisconsin (often called Holy Hill) is a Marian shrine and minor basilica. Tradition links the site to Jesuit explorers like Father Jacques Marquette (not confirmed). A hermit named François Soubrio lived there in the 1860s after reportedly finding an old map and diary. The first log chapel dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians, was built in 1863. Subsequent shrines were constructed as pilgrimages grew.
The current basilica’s cornerstone was laid in 1926, and it was completed and consecrated around 1931 in Romanesque Revival style. The Carmelites have cared for the site since 1906, and it attracts hundreds of thousands of pilgrims and visitors annually for prayer, Masses, and the scenic beauty.
Managed by the Discalced Carmelite Friars since 1906, it was designated a National Shrine and elevated to a minor basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2006. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Hubertus is about 20 miles west of Milwaukee. As the name might suggest, the Basilica is built atop a hill….actually, a glacial kame (A glacial kame is an irregularly shaped hill or mound composed of sand, gravel, and till deposited by a melting glacier) at about 1,350 feet elevation, one of the highest points in southeastern Wisconsin, on roughly 400–435 acres of wooded land. It offers panoramic views, including of the Milwaukee skyline from an observation tower.
