Pope Leo XIV Grants Jubilee Year for Our Lady of Guadalupe from October 12, 2026 – October 12, 2027
Pope Leo XIV has declared a Guadalupan Jubilee Year to mark the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the new Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City and the transfer of the sacred image of the Virgin to the current shrine on October 12, 1976.
This year also coincides with the 131st anniversary of the pontifical coronation of Our Lady of Guadalupe.
Cardinal Carlos Aguiar Retes, Archbishop Primate of Mexico, announced the jubilee with “profound joy and gratitude” and invited the faithful to attend the solemn Mass marking the start of the jubilee on October 12 at noon at the Basilica. The Archdiocese of Mexico has scheduled a series of liturgical and cultural events in the days leading up to the opening, including Lauds, Masses, Vespers, a Rosary, concerts, and the opening of the Holy Door.
The primate archbishop encouraged Catholics to use this period for spiritual renewal and conversion under the protection of Our Lady of Guadalupe, recalling her invitation: “Am I not here, I who am your Mother?”.
During the jubilee, the faithful who visit the Basilica of Santa María de Guadalupe with devotion and a contrite spirit, participate in a liturgical act, or spend time in prayer there, may receive a plenary indulgence for themselves or apply it to the souls in Purgatory.
To obtain it, they must also fulfill the usual Church conditions:
Sacramental confession
Eucharistic Communion
Recitation of the Creed
or the 500th anniversary of Our Lady’s apparitions to St. Juan Diego, with the next Guadalupan Jubilee planned for 2031
Beginning October 12, 2026 pilgrims traveling to The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City will be able to receive a plenary indulgence under the usual conditions.
The Jubilee will continue through October 2027.
