Nicholas is Patron Saint of the souls in Purgatory. He is also considered the patron saint against epidemic disease and against fires.

Although his liturgical celebration was not kept in the 1969 revision of the General Roman Calendar, he is still recognized as one of the Saints of the Roman Catholic Church.
