Feast of Saint John before the Latin Gate

Feast of Saint John before the Latin Gate

All Day
May 6, 2025

Not quite so well-known as the Feast of Saint John the Evangelist on December 27, this feast ( also knows as the Feast of Saint John at the Latin Gate) commemorates the attempted martyrdom of Saint John the Apostle and Evangelist in 95 AD under Emperor Domitian.  It was removed from the General Calendar in 1960 by Pope John XXIII’s Liturgical Commission, which eliminated many secondary feasts, though it remains in the Traditional Latin Mass.

The Basilica of Saint John at the Latin Gate in Rome is built to commemorate the miracle where Saint John survived after being placed in boiling oil by the Roman Emperor.
