Isle of Wight, United Kingdom: Quarr Abbey

About the Monastery at Quarr Abbey:

A few miles off the coast of England, and part of the U.K., lies the Isle of Wight. A popular vacation destination, it also features Quarr Abbey as a place of peace and refuge for all. The original Abbey dated from 1132, from which it grew to great size. Some of the ruins of the early Abbey can still be seen today. The current Abbey dates from 1907, when French monks bought Quarr Abbey House, next door to the ruins of the ancient Quarr Abbey.

Run by the Benedictines and following the Rule of Saint Benedict, the Abbey offers a whole range of activities for visitors and volunteers, including tours of the Abbey itself, the visitor centre and monastery shop, the art gallery, the hens, the pigs and the apiary.

The Tea Garden features Quarr Abbey’s own unique range of products which include ale, eggs, honey, jams and chutneys, all made at Quarr Abbey – grown produce, which is also available for purchase. The shop is open daily except on Good Friday and from Christmas Eve to New Year’s Eve inclusive.

You may join in the spiritual life of the community by attending the daily offices, attending a Mass, asking for prayers, meeting with a priest or a monk, or enquiring about the monastic life.

There is a guest house with 10 rooms that welcomes visitors.

There is a wonderful gift shop offering a very wide range of goods. There is a large selection of greeting cards and postcards; there are many items of a devotional nature, such as rosaries, crucifixes, candles and prayer cards; CDs, including recordings of the monks singing in the church; souvenirs such as bookmarks, key rings, pens and notebooks, and – above all – books.

There is easy access from the mainland via the Fishbourne-Portsmouth Ferry.
