New York City (Bronx): Saints Anselm & Roch Roman Catholic Church

About Saints Anselm & Roch Roman Catholic Church in New York City (Bronx):

The Church of St. Anselm was founded in 1891 to serve the German Catholic community, with Abbot Alexius Edelbrock as its first pastor. The original church was dedicated in 1893, and a brick school opened in 1909 with Dominican Sisters staffing it. A playground was added in 1912, and the parish also sponsored a Fife and Drum Corps in the early 1900s.

Eventually, the Augustinian Recollects took over, and the parish now serves a predominantly Spanish-speaking community.

The building is styled after the Hagia Sophia (Saint Sophia) in Istanbul, Turkey.
