About Saint Takla Maronite Catholic Mission in Dallas, Texas:
The Saint Takla Maronite Catholic Mission takes its name from Saint Takla (Thecla) of Iconium. Known as the first female Christian martyr, St. Takla was a young noblewoman from Iconium (modern-day Turkey) who lived in the 1st century AD. After listening to the teachings of the Apostle Paul through her window for three days, she converted to Christianity and broke her engagement to a prominent local nobleman. Enraged, her family and local authorities subjected her to torture. She miraculously survived being burned at the stake and thrown to wild beasts in the arena in Antioch, emerging completely unharmed.
She eventually became a hermit, living in a cave in Maaloula, Syria, where she spent her life healing the sick and spreading the faith. Her feast day is celebrated on September 24.
Note: The Maronite Catholic church uses an Eastern Rite (the Maronite Rite) and is in full communion with Rome.
