San Jose, Costa Rica: La Iglesia del Coronado (The Church of Coronado)

About La Iglesia del Coronado in San Jose, Costa Rica:

A previous church was located here, but was destroyed by an earthquake in 1910.  Then, on May 18, 1930 Costa Rica’s Archbishop at the time, Cleto González Víquez, placed the first stone of the new church and construction was completed in 1935.  Often cited as the most beautiful church in Costa Rica (quite a statement, since there are many beautiful churches in Costa Rica), the architecture is neo-gothic, inspired from the French gothic architecture (specifically the one of the Notre Dame church in Paris……and the columns of the cathedral in Köln, Germany).

Although the official name is La Parroquia de San Isidro Labrador (St. Isidore’s Parish), it is commonly known as La Iglesia de Coronado (Church of Coronado) because it was named in honor of the first Spanish colonial governor of Costa Rica, Juan Vázquez de Coronado, nephew of the famous explorer Francisco Vázquez de Coronado.
