Zipaquirá, Cundinamarca, Colombia: The Salt Cathedral

 

About the Salt Cathedral:

Located in Columbia is a Salt Mine, similar to the one in Wieliczka, Poland, that houses a church carved completely out of salt.

The Cathedral is not officially designated as a Cathedral in the diocese, but does have Sunday Masses as well as Reconciliation. Blessing of religious articles follows the Mass.

No weddings or baptisms are performed in the Cathedral, these must be performed in a local parish.

The Cathedral is located within the Salt Theme Park, and there is an admission charge to the park.

 

Traveling to the Salt Cathedral:

Bus service from Bogota is frequent, and takes about an hour and a half. The closest international airport is El Dorado International Airport of Bogotá DC, and it is located one hour from Zipaquirá .
