Catholic Shrines & Places of Interest in Colombia

Colombia had a reputation throughout the 1980’s and 90’s as the center of Pablo Escobar’s drug operation, along with much violence. Thankfully, a new period has begun, and Colombia has become one of the safest, and most attractive, tourist destinations in South America. Although visitors are warned to avoid some of the rural areas and, as always, use common sense, tourism is booming in the country.

About 95% of the population of Colombia claims Roman Catholicism as their faith. With this tradition, you can imagine that the country has several Catholic shrines of interest to travelers.

Among the most notable Catholic sites in Colombia are:

Bogota: Sanctuary of the Child Jesus (Divino Nino)

Cartagena: Shrine of Saint Peter Claver

Ipiales: Shrine of Our Lady of Las Lajas

Zipaquirá, Cundinamarca: The Salt Cathedral
