The Cathedral of the Holy Family in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, serves as the seat of the Diocese of Saskatoon. Designed by Friggstad Downing Henry Architects (also referred to as HDH Architects or similar collaborations, it officially opened on December 18, 2011, replacing the older St. Paul’s Cathedral, which had reached capacity limits. St. Paul’s (now often called a co-cathedral) could no longer accommodate needs, so the diocese constructed this new facility as both a parish church and the diocesan cathedral. It functions as a multi-purpose complex including worship space, offices, meeting rooms, banquet facilities, living quarters, library/archives, and community areas.
The Sanctuary seats about 1,200–1,400 (including choir), with overflow capacity up to around 2,000.
The design is described as modernist (we realize not everyone is going to be thrilled with this), with a prominent tall cross visible from afar. Exterior materials include natural stone (e.g., Tyndall Stone) and extensive glazing. Structural elements feature steel framing, hollowcore panels, and an open truss system over the sanctuary.
A notable innovation at the time, some stained-glass windows incorporate photovoltaic solar cells (about 1,000 cells in 54 panels), making it the first church in North America to use this technology in stained glass for energy generation.
The building emphasizes energy efficiency in its HVAC, lighting, and mechanical systems.
