The Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana de Buenos Aires) is best now known for the fact that Pope Francis was the Archbishop of Buenos (then known as Archbishop Jorge Bergoglio) and held Mass here. The cathedral houses the Pope Francis Museum, which holds some of his personal and liturgical objects.

It also houses tombs of famous residents of the city….both clerical and non-clerical. There are the remains of General José de San Martín, the South American liberator regarded as the “Father of the Nation.” (San Martín fought successfully for freedom in Argentina, Peru, and Chile alongside the better-known Simón Bolívar).

Finding the Metropolitan Cathedral in Buenos Aires:

It is located in the city center, overlooking Plaza de Mayo, on the corner of San Martín and Rivadavia streets, in the San Nicolás neighbourhood.
