About Saint Stephen Cathedral in Shkodër, Albania:
Saint Stephen Cathedral (often referred to as the Shkodër Cathedral) was built from 1858 to 1867, and is one of the largest Cathedrals in the Balkans. It was used as a “Sports Palace” under communism and reconsecrated in 1990s.
It features a beautiful coffered wooden ceiling, and in addition to the Cathedral itself, there is a museum with artifacts from the history from early stages of Albanian independence through the Islamic period, then Communist domination and finally the freedom they recently obtained.
In front of the museum…an area known as Saint John Paul II Square, you will see a sculpture dedicated to the martyrs of the communist era of Albania.
