Permission for Latin Mass in the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio

The Vatican has granted permission for the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass at two churches in the Diocese of Cleveland for an additional two years:

St Mary’s Church in Akron

St Stephen’s in Cleveland

Both of these parishes had previously been granted limited approval to continue celebrating the liturgy according to the 1962 Roman Missal (Bishops now require Vatican authorization to permit the older form of the Roman Rite in parish churches, and many dioceses in the United States have since curtailed or withdrawn permissions entirely).

Cleveland’s renewal therefore represents a limited but meaningful continuation for local Catholics attached to the traditional liturgy. Both St Mary’s and St Stephen’s have long been centers for those devoted to the Latin Mass, offering it regularly under diocesan auspices rather than through priestly societies such as the Fraternity of St Peter or the Institute of Christ the King Sovereign Priest.

The two-year extension does not alter the wider policy of the Holy See, which continues to promote the post-Conciliar liturgy as the ordinary expression of the Roman Rite while allowing exceptions under careful regulation.

Note: in similar situations, such as in the Diocese of San Angelo, Texas, bishops have quietly sought to preserve the traditional liturgy as part of their wider mission to foster reverence and unity within their dioceses.

Midland, Texas: Traditional Latin Mass added

Beginning Sunday, August 30, Saint Ann’s Catholic Church in Midland, TX, will become the home to a monthly Traditional Latin Mass celebrated according to the 1962 Missal.

This Mass will be offered on the last Sunday of each month at 3:00 p.m. in the Holy Family Chapel at St. Ann’s Church.

It’s their hope that this time will enable people from West Texas (Lubbock, Amarillo, and El Paso) and Southeastern New Mexico (Las Cruces) to join them for this celebration. This is just a beginning as the diocese discerns a path forward to provide for their people.

Other priests of the diocese will be learning the Traditional Latin Mass in the weeks and months ahead.

The weekly Traditional Latin Mass at St. Margaret’s Church in San Angelo will remain unchanged.
