Saskatoon, Saskatchewan: Saint Joseph Parish

About Saint Joseph Parish in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan:

The parish traces its roots to a Roman Catholic mission in the Nutana area established around 1917. Early services were held in temporary locations like block buildings and a renovated boarding house used as a chapel and school. The permanent St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic Church was designed by Saskatoon architect Gentil Verbeke and cost about $85,000 to build built in 1928, marking the third Catholic parish in Saskatoon and the first on the east side of the city.

The church and rectory are a designated heritage property, recognized for their Romanesque Revival architecture. The church is in Cruciform (cross-shaped) plan, with variegated red and brown brick with terracotta accents, paired towers with octagonal domes (one intended as a bell tower), an arched entrance with open arcades, Gothic columns, and decorative elements. The interior symmetry features columns, stained-glass windows, and oak detailing. There is also a large rose window.
