About The Sanctuary of Saint John Paul II (Santuario San Giovanni Paolo II):
Not far from the center of L’Aquila (10 miles/ 6 km) at an altitude of 1,170 meters above sea level, is the mountain hamlet of San Pietro della Iencaa quiet stone haven nestled directly in the Abruzzo mountains, perfectly reflecting the Pope’s deep love for nature and outdoor retreats. The area is a prime starting point for hiking and pilgrimage trails, including the strenuous “Path of the Two Saints” which connects to the Sanctuary of St. Gabriel.
The area was a favorite ski destination of Pope John Paul II and he would often celebrate Mass here in this church close to the mountains…so it is fitting that The Sanctuary of Saint Pope John Paul II (Santuario San Giovanni Paolo II) be located here in the medieval village of San Pietro della Ienca, near Assergi in the Gran Sasso National Park.
On May 18, 2011, the tiny Church of San Pietro della Ienca was dedicated to became the first European Sanctuary dedicated to Pope Saint John Paul II.
It now contains the Shrine of Pope John Paul II with a bronze statue of him and a vial of his blood inside. The Shrine is a definite must-see if you going to visit L’Aquila.
