Carfin, Scotland : The Lourdes Grotto

About The Lourdes Grotto in Carfin:

Carfin Grotto in ScotlandSome 20 miles (12 Km) east of Glasgow, Scotland you will find a replica of the Lourdes Grotto at Saint Francis Xavier Parish in Carfin. This is Scotland’s national shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary and was built in the 1920’s with the help of local parishoners under the direction of Father Thomas Taylor. Father Taylor had led a group of pilgrims to Lourdes previously and wanted to be able to offer the opportunity for people to share this experience without actually traveling to France.

Over the years it has become a popular place of pilgrimage for many groups both from the U.K. and abroad.

Another feature here is the All Saints Reliquary Chapel. The Chapel contains some 735 relics of various saints, most of them with certificates of authentication. This makes it one of the largest single collections of relics outside of Rome.

The Chapel is open weekday afternoons from about 1:30 p.m.(after end of 1:00 Mass until 2:30 p.m. and on Sundays from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.) Arrangements can be made for other times by contacting the shrine office.
