About Mount Saint Bernard Abbey:
The U.K. monks are a Cistercian monastic community of the Strict Observance in rural Leicestershire. According to their website, their mission is to “affirm a life of work and prayer; of radical discipleship and fidelity to the Gospel, the Rule of Saint Benedict and the Constitutions and Statues of the Cistercian order.”
Beginning in July 2018, they began the ancient tradition of making beer. After visiting the brew monks of Norcia, Italy on several occasions, thew decided to start brewing beer themselves. This will be the first beer brewed by monks in England since the dissolution of the monasteries by King Henry VII in the 16th Century.
The beer, trademarked with the “Authentic Trappist Product” label, indicates that a beer meets a number of exclusive standards, and this becomes only the twelfth brewery in the world that qualifies for that label.
Visiting the Abbey:
Visitors are welcome to attend daily Mass, Vespers, Adoration as well as tour the Abbey and buy items at the gift shop.
There is Guest House accommodation for relatives and friends of the monks, retreatants, and those interested in their monastic way of life. The Abbey is a religious house and is unable to accommodate bed and breakfast, half-board, or tourist guests. Duration of your stay varies from one or two nights up to five days, which is the normal allocation in any one year.
Special arrangements are possible, upon request, from the Guestmaster. The Abbey does not charge guests for their stay, but we are grateful for offerings made to help defray the cost of running the Guest House.
