About The Shrine of Our Lady of Glastonbury in Glastenbury, Somerset, England:
The original wooden church here was destroyed in 1184 AD, but a stone church dedicated to Our Lady was consecrated in 1186 AD. For centuries, it was a major pilgrimage site, attracting visitors from across Europe. In 1539 AD, during the Reformation, the last Abbot of Glastonbury, Blessed Richard Whiting, and companions were executed on Glastonbury Tor for refusing to abandon the faith.
The shrine as re-born in 1925 with a small church, later expanded in 1939, becoming the modern Church of Our Lady of Glastonbury. The current church serves as the heart of a vibrant Catholic community in Glastonbury and hosts an annual Diocesan Pilgrimage each September, themed around Mary as Mother of the Faithful. On September 8, coinciding with the Nativity of Mary, pilgrims historically gathered here for a fair .
The church has icons of Our Lady gifted by the Karoussos Archives of Athens, symbolizing the spiritual bond with the island of Patmos.
