About The Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux in Vina, California:
The monks of the Abbbey are Cistercians of the Strict Observance, founded by Saints Robert, Alberic and Stephen Harding in the year AD 1098. Today, they are commonly known as “Trappists.” With the ancient Rule of Saint Benedict as their guide, they offer hospitality to guests, serve in mutual charity, and live their contemplative witness of silence, stillness and solitude in an often frenetic and busy world today.
The Abbey of Our Lady of New Clairvaux continues a long tradition of exceptional Cistercian viticulture (Viticulture is the science and practice of cultivating grapevines, encompassing all agricultural activities involved in growing grapes for wine, table grapes, or raisins. It focuses on managing environmental factors—such as soil, temperature, and sun—and techniques like pruning and irrigation to optimize vine performance). the Monks here draw on the inspiration of centuries of viticulture work by monks from the beginning of their Order in Burgundy, France in 1098.
With a legacy that includes the development of some of the largest and most renowned vineyards of the Middle Ages, viticulture and winemaking innovations, and a reputation for producing the best quality product in the global wine industry. The mission starts with their two estate blocks: Poor Souls and St. James. Each one is 15 acres, and demonstrate the unique and dynamic terroir of Vina. St. James Block, overseen by and worked by the monks themselves, is certified organic since 2020, and reflects the monastic community’s desire to produce an excellent and wholesome product that respects and enhances the earth and the environment that they share with their neighbors and visitors.
The church is open to visitors for Divine Offices as well as self-guided tours from 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM, Monday through Saturday, but is closed for holidays and retreats periodically throughout the year. Mass remains open. Be sure to check their website for the most recent information.
