Scottish colonists established the settlement here in 1683, naming it “New Perth” after the Earl of Perth. Over three centuries it developed both an industrial and maritime economy. Perth Amboy served as the capital of the Province of New Jersey from 1686 to 1776.

Situated at the mouth of the Raritan River and bordering Raritan Bay, it is known as the “City by the Bay”. The city is part of the New York metropolitan area and offers deep-water access to the Atlantic Ocean. It became a popular resort town on the Raritan Bayshore.   

The Industrial Revolution in the mid-1800s brought significant growth and immigration, leading to a diverse population. The population of Perth Amboy was approximately 55,000 as of the 2023 census.

Perth Amboy is about 30 miles southwest of the New York City metropolitan area. Situated at the mouth of the Raritan River and bordering Raritan Bay, it is known as the “City by the Bay”. The city is part of the New York metropolitan area and offers deep-water access to the Atlantic Ocean.

Neawark’s Liberty Airport(EWR) is the closest airport, located about 14 miles from Perth Amboy; otherwise you fly in to New York’s La Guardia (LGW) or John F. Kenedy (JFK) Airport, each about 28 miles from Perth Amboy.

Perth Amboy has train service provided by New Jersey Transit.  The nearest Amtrak train service would be New York’s Penn Station.
