Peoria, Illinois: Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception & Tomb of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen

About the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria:

The Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception is a Gothic Cathedral that could rival any in Europe.  Be sure to see the relics that are kept here.

Of special interest in the Cathedral, beginning in 2019,  is the tomb of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen.  Originally laid to rest in Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, a legal dispute arose  between the Archdiocese of New York and Archbishop Sheen’s closest living relative, his niece Joan Cunningham Sheen, who represented the wishes of her family and the Diocese of Peoria, arguing that her uncle’s remains should be transferred to the cathedral here. The Archdiocese of New York, however, wished to keep Sheen’s body in St. Patrick’s Cathedral.  The New York Diocese fought to keep his body, but in June 2019, the New York Court of Appeals decided in Sheen’s niece’s favor on June 7, 2019, and his remains were moved here.
