Gretna began in the summer of 1886 after the Burlington Railroad built a short line between Omaha and Ashland. The Lincoln Land Company surveyed and platted the town site in 1887; it was incorporated on July 10, 1889. The name draws from Gretna Green in Scotland, reflecting the origins of some early settlers. Today, Gretna ranks among Nebraska’s fastest-growing communities, with substantial expansion driven by housing development and proximity to major employment centers. The 2020 U.S. Census recorded 5,083 residents; however, more recent estimates put the population around 9,000–9,200.
