Massillon, Ohio: National Shrine of Saint Dymphna

About Saint Dymphna:

In an age of stress and uncertainty, mental health is challenged perhaps as never before. Anxiety disorders, depression and suicide seem to be in the headlines on a daily basis.  Too often, people resort to drugs…both legal and illegal…to help ease their pain.  But there is a better way:

There is a patron saint of mental and nervous disorders: Saint Dymphna. Her story dates from 7th Century Ireland. Her mother died unexpectedly and her father was so distraught that he was determined to find someone as beautiful as she had been. He became deranged and, when he could not find anyone to replace her, was advised that there was none so becoming as his own daughter. He was talked into trying to marry her.

Naturally, she was repulsed by this idea and fled, along with her spiritual advisor, to Gheel, Belgium. Unfortunately, her father finally tracked her down, she still refused and he killed her.
