As the first Catholic parish established in Indianapolis, Saint John’s was its pro-cathedral from 1871 to 1907. The diocesan Chancery was housed here until 1968 and the Metropolitan Tribunal was here until 1982, when all Archdiocesan offices moved into the original Cathedral High School building.

Saint John the Evangelist is the oldest Catholic parish in the city and serves a wide range of groups that include traditional parishioners, families, young adults, college students, daily Mass goers and visitors to the city. The parish frequently welcomes thousands of visitors for Final Fours, Super Bowls, conventions, and for the USA Swimming Olympic Trials.
