Houston, Texas: Cathedral and Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham

About the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter:

To give you a bit of background (in case you don’t know it) the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham falls under the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter, which is a Diocese created by Pope Benedict XVI  in 2012 for people nurtured in the Anglican tradition who wished to become Catholic.    Members are often former Anglicans or Episcopalians who have become Catholic, but also those Catholics who prefer a more traditional form of worship; in this case the Anglican Rite..  And, in fact, many of the priests are former Anglicans or Episcopalians as well….which means that some of them will be married priests.  This can be confusing at first; but obviously, when a married Anglican priest converts we can hardly expect him to leave his wife and children behind.

The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston is the seat of the Bishop of this wide-ranging Diocese.

About the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham in Houston, Texas:

As you might expect, the Cathedral bears many of the hallmarks of the old English churches from which it derives its history.  The church was designed by the firm of Cram & Ferguson Architects to reflect our Anglican heritage.

The exterior is faced with Texas limestone and inspired by 14th century churches in the Walsingham area of Norfolk, England.  The bells were cast in Normandy, France by the Cornille-Havard Bell Foundry. The beautiful stained glass windows were designed by Willet Studios in Philadelphia. The wooden pulpit, the altar rail and the wooden facade of the Holy House Chapel were carved in Colombia. The hand-carved reredos and the tabernacle were handcrafted in Spain by Grande Liturgical Arts.

About the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham inside the Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham:

The Cathedral has many saints relics, including those of Saint John Fisher, Saint Thomas More, Blessed Miguel Pro and many more that are available for veneration.  There are also several relics related to the Passion of Our Lord.
