Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land, Washington, D.C.

About the Franciscan Monastery of the Holy Land:

Although the name can be a bit misleading, you will find this beautiful monastery located in the U.S. Capitol in the District of Columbia. The Franciscans have been in charge of the holy sites in the Holy Land for over 700 years. The Monastery here in Washington was built to serve those who could not physically travel to the Holy Land and includes replicas of many of the sites that the Franciscans oversee in the Holy Land, including Nativity Grotto in Bethlehem and the tomb of Christ in Jerusalem. There are also full-size replicas of the Catacombs and martyr’s crypts.

In addition, there are Stations of the Cross, beautiful gardens and replicas of the Lourdes Grotto as well as the Portunicula (garden of the thornless rosebush in Assisi). One visitor described the monastery as “frozen in time”, perhaps a tribute to the peace and tranquility inside the bustling city of Washington.

It is located just a short distance from the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception as well as the John Paul II Shrine.

The Memorial Church of the Holy Sepulchre, begun in 1897, is on the grounds of the monastery and offers Mass at least twice a day, plus special Masses on Holy Days. There is also the opportunity for Confession daily Monday through Saturday as well as Mass in Spanish on Sundays.

If you do visit, please consider shopping at their Holy Land Gift Shop…..they sell articles produced by Christians in the Holy Land who greatly need..and appreciate…your support.  The Franciscans also sponsor pilgrimages to the Holy Land and can help in arranging group or individual travel.
