About Sochi, Russia:

Sochi (Russian: Сочи) is Russia’s largest and most popular resort city, often called the “Russian Riviera” on the same latitude as Nice and Monte Carlo. It stretches along the northeastern coast of the Black Sea at the foot of the western Caucasus Mountains in Krasnodar Krai, southern Russia. Founded in 1838 as a fort and later developed as a resort in the Soviet era, the city has a population of around 466,000, with the total urban area up to around 600,000. Greater Sochi spans about 90 miles (145 km) along the coast of the Black Sea. Sochi hosted the 2014 Winter Olympics (and Paralympics), which brought massive infrastructure upgrades, including venues, roads, and the modern Olympic Park. It also hosted matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
Geographically, Sochi is a study in contrasts: it has a humid subtropical climate; rare for Russia, hence its popularity as a resort. Sochi has mild winters (January temperatures typically range from 41° to 59 °F (5° to 15 °C) during the day and 28° to 43 °F (−2° to 6 °C) at night with warm, humid summers. Palm trees, magnolias, and other subtropical plants thrive here. Summers (June–September) are hot and sunny, ideal for beaches, while winters are mild in the city but snowy in the mountains (great for skiing at Krasnaya Polyana).he city is famous for its unique combination of subtropical seaside climate and nearby alpine terrain, making it a year-round destination for beach relaxation, mountain adventures, and wellness tourism…. sea plus mountains in one trip
Sochi’s main promenade (especially around the Seaport) is lined with palms, cafes, and people-watching spots.
Rosa Khutor is a popular resort area with trails and adventure activities. Among some of the attractions are Arboretum Park (Dendrarium), A beautiful botanical garden with exotic plants, fountains, and sea views; Riviera Park, a central amusement park with rides, gardens, and events; nearby spots like the 33 Waterfalls, Agura Waterfalls, or canyons in the Caucasus foothills; Sochi National Park offers hiking and biodiversity; Stalin’s Dacha (Villa) — Historic summer residence of Joseph Stalin, now a museum with preserved interiors; Matsesta sulfur springs (wellness/spa treatments), and tea plantations in the hills.
Catholic places of interest in Sochi, Russia:
Sochi is part of the Diocese of Saint Clement at Saratov(Краснодарский деканат). There is one major Catholic place of interest in Sochi: the Church of Saints Jude Thaddeus and Simon (Russian: Храм Апостолов Симона и Фаддея or Приход Святых Апостолов Фаддея и Симонаa). Built between 1995–1997, it is a Neo-Gothic Revival building that is a striking contrast in a city dominated by Orthodox architecture and modern Olympic-era buildings. it is a Latin Rite Roman Catholic parish church in Sochi, one of the larger and more popular Catholic churches in the Krasnodar Region and serves the local Catholic community and visitors in this predominantly Orthodox region.
Before the current church, a small Catholic chapel existed nearby (on Volgogradskaya Street, 41, built around 1992) under the Polish national cultural center. It featured carved crucifixes, an organ, and a small stained-glass window — items later incorporated into the new church. The parish grew from this modest beginning, reflecting the small but active Catholic presence in Sochi (often tied to Polish, German, or other European diaspora communities, as well as tourists and residents).
The dedication ties into early Christian traditions: both apostles are linked in legend with missionary work in Persia, Armenia, and the broader Caucasus area (near Sochi/Abkhazia). Nearby, in Abkhazia (close to Sochi), there is historical veneration of St. Simon the Zealot, with ancient sites associated with his martyrdom and relics.Architecture and AtmosphereThe neo-Gothic design gives it pointed arches, vertical emphasis, and a European cathedral-like feel — somewhat unusual amid Sochi’s subtropical setting and Soviet/modern architecture. It includes elements from the earlier chapel and serves as a peaceful worship space.
It was designated a Jubilee Church for the Holy Year 2025. Regular Masses (check the official site katoliksochi.ru or call for current schedule, as times can vary).
Sochi’s Catholic community is small compared to the dominant Russian Orthodox presence, but this church stands out for its architectural style and connection to the apostles’ legacy in the Caucasus.
