Qatar (pronounced “cutter”) is located on a peninsula bordering the Persian Gulf and Saudi Arabia.  The country is largely desert, with a long coastline of beaches and dunes.  Qatar is roughly 100 miles long and 50 miles wide……slightly smaller than that of the U.S. state of Connecticut.

The official language is Arabic, but English is also widely spoken.  It is a monarchy ruled by the Al Thani family and has a modern economy based on energy exports of oil and gas, which have made it one of the wealthiest countries in the world.

Islam is the dominant religion in Qatar, with a significant Muslim population.  Qatar is a constitutional monarchy ruled by the Al Thani family.  The chief of state is the Emir, and the head of government is the Prime Minister.  Qatar has a long history of political stability, something not always true in other parts of the middle east.   The country is known for its hospitality and welcoming attitude towards visitors.  Qatar has a growing tourism sector, with attractions like the Pearl-Qatar artificial island and the Museum of Islamic Art.

Qatar hosted the 2022 FIFA World Cup, which brought attention to the country.

The country has recently been involved in international negotiations, including those related to the conflict in Gaza and is also a significant partner for the United States in the Middle East, with ongoing defense agreements.

Doha, the capital, is home to over 80% of the population, a  significant portion of which is made up of expats from various countries.

Christianity in Qatar:

Christians make up about 14% of the total population. Most of them are immigrants or foreign workers from East Asian countries like the Philippines and India, and others from Europe, the Americas and Africa. The government recognizes Christian marriages, and churches recognized by the government are allowed to conduct religious classes.

The Capitol city of Doha includes the  Religious Complex in Abu Hamour, an area set aside for various religions.  The State permits Christians to worship privately and has recognized several Christian churches.

A total of six churches were built in this complex which is now home to nearly a hundred smaller churches and religious groups. All of them offer worship services in different languages to cater to various international communities.  With respect for the Islamic laws of Qatar, the churches do not display Christian symbols like crosses, bells, or a steeple on their exterior.

Catholic places of interest in Qatar:

In the past, Catholics and other Christians were limited to informal group meetings in homes.  Qatar forms part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Northern Arabia.  As of 2023, there were about 350,000 Catholics in Qatar (including 9 priests).  As is the case in many middle-eastern countries, most Catholics are expatriate workers from the Philippines, Europe and India.

The vast majority of the country lives in the capital of Doha.

There are are also two Eastern Rite Catholic Churches (in full communion with Rome):  St. Mary’s Malankara Catholic Church and St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Church.

Traveling to Qatar:

Visa Requirements:
The specific visa requirements depend on the traveler’s nationality. Some nationalities, including those from the U.S. and many other European and American countries, can enter Qatar without a prior visa.

Warning:  As is true for entry in to many other countries, your passport needs to be valid for at least 3 months after your arrival date. There is a nominal ($20 US) entry fee.

Others may need to apply for a visa online through the Hayya platform or obtain a visa upon arrival at Hamad International Airport.

The capital city of Doha is served by many international airlines.  For those traveling from the U.S., Qatar Airways operates non-stop flights from several U.S. cities:  New York’s JFK international airport  to Doha (Airport Codes IATA: DIA; ICAO: OTBD).  Flight time for the non-stop flights from New York is about 12 hours (overnight, thank goodness).  There are also non-stop flights from Dallas/Fort Worth taking about the same time.
