Manila, Philippines: Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (the Quiapo Church)

About the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene:

Known as the Quiapo church, the building here has a long history, but the real fame is that it houses the statue of “the Black Nazarene”, a figure of Jesus that was carved by a Mexican artist in the 17th Century. It was carved from black wood, hence the name given to it.

Quaipo church has a Novena every Friday, and each year Quiapo Day is attended by thousands.

Black Nazarene Day:

The most impressive event each year is Black Nazarene Day, held on January 9th. It is to celebrate the translation of the statue from the Church of Saint Nicholas Tolentino, where it was originally placed, to the Quiapo Church.

Men who have a devotion to the Black Nazarene march in procession through the district, and the participants number one million or more on the festive occasion. The celebration begins the day before, with adoration, Mass and overnight vigil until 6:00 a.m. on the 9th. Then, on the 9th, at 6:00 a.m. the Cardinal says Mass and afterwards the procession begins. It is a thoroughly uplifting experience to take part in this faith-filled event.
