Beirut, Lebanon: Saint Elias Greek Catholic Cathedral

About Saint Elias Greek Catholic Cathedral in Beirut, Lebanon

Designed in a Byzantine style, construction began around 1849 on the site of a former 19th-century Choueirite convent. The cathedral is known for its beautiful, detailed mosaics, a stunning dome, and a serene, contemplative atmosphere. It has a neo-classical interior, Gothic arches, and a distinctive marble iconostasis (a wall separating the sanctuary from the nave).

The Cathedral suffered severe damage during the Lebanese Civil War (1975–1990) due to its location near the “Green Line,” but was fully restored after the war.

It serves as the mother church of the Melkite Archdiocese of Beirut (the Melkite Greek Catholic Church is in full communion with the Pope and the Roman Catholic Church. They retain the Byzantine liturgy, traditions, and customs while acknowledging the authority of the Holy See.

(Note: This Cathedral should not to be confused with the Armenian Catholic Cathedral of Saint Elias and Saint Gregory the Illuminator, which is also located in Beirut).
