Parma, Italy: Parma Cathedral

About Parma Cathedral:

Parma Cathedral (officially known as the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta or Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary) is one of the most important Romanesque monuments in northern Italy, The cathedral’s origins trace back to an early Christian basilica, but the current structure began after a fire destroyed the previous building in 1058 A.D.. Construction of the new building started in 1074 A.D. under Bishop Cadalo, and it was consecrated in 1106 A.D. by Pope Paschal II.

A devastating earthquake in 1117 A.D. severely damaged it, leading to major reconstruction and modifications, much of it overseen by the sculptor and architect Benedetto Antelami around 1178. The Gothic bell tower was added later (1284–1294), topped by a gilt copper angel. Over the centuries, side chapels were added, and Renaissance artists contributed stunning decorations.
