Rome: Church of Santa Maria della Pace & tomb of Saint Josemaría Escrivá

About the Church of Santa Maria della Pace in Rome:

Not really on the must-see list of many people, this small church has masterpieces by Raphael (his “Four Sibyls”, Peruzzi (‘Virgin & Child’) , Orazio Gentileschi and several other great masters. All without the crowds at some of the more well-known churches in Rome, makes it an art-lovers dream.

This would make the church a great place to visit in its own right, but it also houses the tomb of one of our most recent saints: Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei.

About Josemaría Escrivá:

Saint_Josemaria_EscrivaBorn January 9. 1902 in the town of Barbastro, Spain, Josemaría Escrivá went on to earn a doctorate in civil law at the Complutense University of Madrid and a doctorate in theology at the Lateran University in Rome.

He was called “The Saint of Ordinary Life.”  by Pope Saint John Paul II, who canonized him in 2002.

We celebrate the Feast of Saint Josemaría Escrivá on June 26.

About Opus Dei:

Opus Dei ( whose meaning is “The Work of God”) was founded by Josemaría Escrivá on October 2, 1928. emphasizing a call to holiness in ordinary Christian life.  It was originally open to men only, but soon was open to women as well.  Opus Dei is not religious order or a Secular Institute.  It is a Personal Prelature (a canonical structure of the Catholic Church which comprises clergy and laity under the jurisdiction of a prelate, who undertake specific pastoral activities).  A bit of a mouthful, we know.

In the words of Josemaría Escrivá:  “We have to be contemplative souls in the middle of the world, who strive to turn our work into prayer“.
