Anagni, Italy

About Anagni, Italy:

Anagni was conquered by the Romans in 306 BC.  The well-preserved ancient walls and a medieval town layout are interesting in themselves, but of greater interest to Catholics is the fact that, during the Middle Ages, it became known as the “City of the Popes”, not only because it was a papal residence but also the birthplace of four popes: Innocent III, Gregory IX, Alexander IV, and Boniface VIII.

Pope Boniface VIII was famously imprisoned here in 1303 AD by King Philip IV of France during a power struggle between the king and the papacy. The Pope was held for three days before being rescued by the townspeople, but he was left physically and mentally broken and died shortly afterward.

The city has also experienced sieges by the Arabs and the Spanish over the centuries.
