Westport, County Mayo, Ireland: A Great Home Base in Western Ireland
One of County Mayo’s loveliest towns, Westport, is nestled on the shores of Clew Bay. Once a major port, it is one of the few planned towns of Ireland, designed by Richard Castle.
We recommend it as a “home base” if you are visiting Knock, Croagh Patrick and other sites in Western Ireland.
It is a short drive from these places (less than 20 miles) and the town gives you the real feel of Ireland. There are lively pubs (you will more often than not find musicians entertaining everyone), good shopping and a relaxed atmosphere in Westport.
