Budapest, Hungary: Shrine of Our Lady of Remete
About Our Lady of Remete:
On the outskirts of Budapest lies a Marian shrine dating from the 18th Century. It houses an image of the Blessed Virgin Mary that a woman had placed on a tree that was a replica of the picture of Our Lady of Einsieden (Switzerland). The woman would stop during her daily duties and pray before the image, and soon others began to join her. After the woman died people continued to stop by and pray.
Around 1800 a woman who was blind stopped by to pray and was miraculously healed. From that time on thousands have continued to visit (there is now a small stone chapel on the site) and that includes Pope John Paul II who prayed before the image. Thousands of ex-votos line the outside of the church giving thanks for prayers answered.
Traveling to Our Lady of Remete:
The Shrine is right on the outskirts of Budapest…you can reach it by city bus or taxi, but it is somewhat hidden away from the street so it may be difficult to spot at first.
Some tour groups also include the shrine as part of their itinerary while visiting Budapest.
