About Munich, Germany:
Munich is the capital of Bavaria, the heart of Catholicism in Germany. In 1327 the town was nearly destroyed by fire. Holy Roman Emperor Louis IV (also known as Louis the Bavarian) promoted the rebuilding of the town and it recovered. Munich continued to prosper until 1634, when it was hit by another catastrophe: the bubonic plague. One third of the population perished. It took several hundred years to regain its lost population.
The Old Town (Altstadt) the central Marienplatz square contains the Neo-Gothic Neues Rathaus (town hall), where you can see the famous glockenspiel that chimes and reenacts stories from the 16th century. Munich is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration (which actually starts around the third week in September) as well as its beer halls, including the famed Hofbräuhaus, founded in 1589.
