About Église Sainte-Croix (Holy Cross Church) in Provins:
The church was built around the 13th century.
King Theobold IV had answered the call of Pope Gregory IX for a Crusade in 1239, and led a French contingent which landed at Acre September 1, 1239. He marched south to attack the Egyptian outposts of Ascalon and Gaza, where his army was defeated.
He returned to Europe in Sep 1240, bringing with him a fragment of the “Croix de Terre Sainte” (Holy Cross).
The church contains elements from various periods, including: a vault from the 13th century and a 16th-century main gate and stained-glass windows.
The church underwent restoration after a 1309 fire and then further restoration in the 21st century, completed in 2025.
