Bayeux, France: Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux: The Bayeux Tapestry

About the Bayeux Tapestry:

The Bayeux Tapestry is 1,000 years old and tells, in pictures, the story of the transformation of William the Conqueror. He was Duke of Normandy from 1035 and by 1060 he had gained full control over Normandy.  He then launched the Norman campaign to conquer England, culminating in the victory at the Battle of Hastings on October 14, 1066.

Over 230 feet (70 meters) long, it is actually needlework rather than a tapestry as the name implies.   In age when few people were literate, it was a “history book” for centuries.

About the Musée de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Bayeux:

Although the Bayeux Tapestry is the main attraction here, there is much more to the museum as well.  The tapestry itself is preserved behind glass….a necessity when you consider its age….but you can clearly see all of the details.  There is a fee to enter the museum.  Be sure to check the hours before visiting.  Please note: The Museum is closed the entire month of January every year
