Egypt

About Egypt:

The site of ancient civilization, many think of Egypt as the land of the Pharoes and the Pyramids, the Nile River, all of which are part of Egypt.  But there is more to the country than its ancient history.

Most of us are familiar with the story of the baby Moses being cast adrift in wicker basket on the Nile River (Exodus 2:1-10). Pharoah, fearing the growing Hebrew population, issued a decree ordering the killing of all Hebrew male infants.  To save Moses from this fate, his mother, Jochebed, wove a basket from papyrus reeds and coated it with bitumen and pitch to make it watertight. This sealed vessel is often referred to as an “ark,” echoing Noah’s story of the Ark offering safe deliverance through water..  She placed him in the basket among the reeds of the Nile River, hoping that a compassionate person, would find him.  And it turned out that Pharaoh’s daughter was the one who rescued him and raised him as her own, although we know few of the details.

And, again, most of us are familiar with the flight in to Egypt. The Lord had appeared to Joseph in a dream saying the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. “Get up,” he said, “take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to kill him.” (Matthew 2:13–23).
