About the Metropolitan Cathedral Santuario Nacional San José in San José, Puerto Rico:
The original Cathedral built in 1802 was destroyed by an earthquake. The building we see today was finished in 1871.
The Cathedral has been designated as a National Sanctuary. According to Canon Law, the name of sanctuary is designated a church or other place to which, for peculiar reasons of piety, numerous faithful come on pilgrimage, with the approval of the Ordinary of the place.
In the new Sanctuary you can venerate the image that is located precisely on the altar of San José, it is an image of Spanish origin that dates back to 1926.
