Altar with reliquary

The church of Saint Philomena here has some magnificent features. The main altar is by M. Ferdinand Villeneuve de St-Romuald, 1886.  The canopy over the altar is also by Ferdinand Villeneuve and is a gift of the Abbot Alphonse A. Beaudet, parish priest of Sainte-Philomène de Fortierville (1882 to 1897) and an anonymous donor.  It is one of the most beautiful architectural pieces of the church and the most precious. There is a statue of Sainte-Philomene was sculpted by Quebec sculptor Louis Jobin, (a renowned artist who has made exceptional works) in 1884.

There are many other statues in the church:  Sacred Heart of Jesus; Sainte-Anne (gift of Mr. Anthime Baril); St. Francis of Assisi; Saint Anthony of Padua; Saint John Vianney (the Curé of Ars); and two worshipping angels.

Reliquary with relic of Saint PhilomenaBut what makes the church in this small town even more special is that it  posseses a relic of Saint Philomena.  The priest serving the first church here had a special devotion to St. Philomena and he asked that their church be dedicated to this little saint.

The relic of Saint Philomena is a first class relic ( a peice of bone) given to the church by the Bishop of Mugnano, Italy, Mgr. Franciscus Vitagliano on August 11, 1884 (the year of the beginning of the construction of the church).  Mugnano del Cardinale is the site of the Shrine of Saint Philomena.  The relic is in a silver reliquary as shown on the left.

In addition there are relics in the high altar of the sacristy:  St. Clement, Blessed François de Montmorency of Laval.

There is also a small museum and they have guides during the summer season. They are open every day from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm from the end of June to the end of August. They are also available by appointment in the off-season.
