Sioux Falls, South Dakota: Saint Joseph’s Cathedral

The history of St.Joesph’s in Sioux Falls:

The Diocese of Sioux Falls was established in 1889, the same year South Dakota became America’s fortieth state. Though the state was rural and sparsely populated, Bishop Thomas O’Gorman dreamed of building a cathedral. By 1915, the bishop’s determination began to pay off. French architect Emmanuel Masqueray, designer of St. Paul Cathedral in Minneapolis, drew the plans for the Saint Joseph Cathedral.

About the Cathedral:

Visitors today will see an incredibly beautiful and pristine cathedral that is much like it was when it first opened. In 2011, the diocese finished 15 years of renovations that included structural work and the complete replacement of the wiring, sound systems, and climate control, in addition to restoration of artistic elements.

A renovation in the 1970’s scaled back the cathedral’s grandeur by whitewashing the richly ornamented walls and removing ornate confessionals. But now the walls have been restored to their warm golden tones and reproductions of the confessional booths are back. A marble floor has replaced the plain 1970’s tile.

Highlights of the cathedral include an amazing pipe organ whose 3,292 pipes range from a few inches to 18 feet long. The paintings high up on the transepts and ceilings depict the Nativity, the Annunciation and Joseph’s death.

The best ways to see the cathedral are at Mass or on a tour. Sunday Masses are at 7:30, 9:15 and 11 in the morning. Saturday vigil is at 4:00 p.m. Daily Mass is celebrated at 6:45 a.m. Monday through Friday in the chapel, and noon in the nave.

Parishioner volunteers lead tours Monday through Friday at 1:00 p.m. Anne Bass said even though she grew up in the parish, she learned a lot on the tour. Groups of ten or more can arrange a special tour by calling 605-336-7390. The cathedral and chapel are also open for prayer and self-guided tours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
