Chicopee, Massachusetts: Saint Stanislaus Basilica
About Saint Stanislaus Basilica in Chicopee:
This magnificent structure was built by Polish immigrants in the 19th Century, is one the most beautiful churches in the entire state. The original church was replaced by a larger one in 1908 to accommodate the growing number of parishioners, and can hold at least 800 worshippers.
Having had a local pastor in the early years, the Franciscan Friars, Order of Friars Minor Conventual took charge in the early 20th Century.
A pipe organ was installed in the choir loft in 1920. Magnificent stained-glass windows grace the upper church….the work of talented European artists.
The lower church is a more modern design, and is used for daily for Masses, confessions, Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, as well as for other services.
A sizable collection of relics in reliquaries is displayed in special-built cabinets near the sacristy.
They have recently added a shrine to Saint Kateri Tekawitha. There is also a school and friary here.
