The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to the Cospes tribe’s chief, Coromoto, and his wife by a stream, urging them to embrace Christianity and receive baptism from the Spanish.
After the chief initially resisted, the Virgin appeared again in his hut on September 8, 1652; in a moment of fear, he tried to harm her, but she vanished, leaving a small, miraculously preserved parchment image (a tiny relic) in his hand.
