Montevideo, Uruguay: National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Santuario Nacional del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús)

About the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Santuario Nacional del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús) in Montevideo, Uruguay:

More commonly known as the Iglesia del Cerrito or “Church of the Little Hill”, the National Shrine of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a prominent parish church and national shrine in Montevideo, Uruguay. It serves as a key pilgrimage site dedicated to the devotion of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, symbolizing reparation and mercy.

The shrine’s origins trace back to the late 19th century amid a growing devotion to the Sacred Heart in Uruguay. In 1889, during the First Catholic Assembly of Uruguay, it was decided to build a dedicated church on the summit of the Cerrito de la Victoria (a historic hill named for the 1812 revolutionary victory over Spanish forces led by José Gervasio Artigas). The land was acquired in 1902 by Archbishop Mariano Soler and in 1921 a design competition selected the project by Italian Salesian priest Ernesto Vespignani. The first phase of building took place between 1926 and 1938, though it remained incomplete.

The shrine was officially inaugurated on February 26, 1928, with Father Antonio Evers of the Sacramentine Order appointed as its first parish priest. On October 28, 1928 (the feast of Christ the King) the image of the Sacred Heart was enthroned atop the church, and Uruguay was publicly consecrated to the Sacred Heart. That same day, it was declared a National Shrine.
